Guided Rambling Holidays

Eastern Tuscany,  Italy
Where We Stay:

We spend seven nights at the atmospheric Hotel Oasi Neumann which is just a short walk outside the the ancient walls of the town of Cortona. Still owned by the church, the hotel is formerly the Convent of Santa Maria alle Contesse and stands beside a 12th century church amid extensive, serene gardens with fountains and lemon trees. The views over the Tuscan countryside are stunning. The restaurant is located in the original convent refectory and the Oasi has its own medieval wine cellar. Rooms are simple but comfortable with twin or queen beds, TV, free Wifi, hairdryer and private modern bathroom with shower.  http://www.hoteloasi.org

The hotel is in a quiet location only a 10 minute walk into the town of Cortona.  This Tuscan town is perhaps best known as the setting for the book and movie “Under the Tuscan Sun”. With its long history dating back to Etruscan times, Cortona's top attractions include the Duomo (Cathedral), the small Museo Diocesano with its superb art collection, and the fascinating Museo dell Accademia Etrusca with its Etruscan and Roman era items. But there is more to Cortona than history. There are shops for browsing, cafes for a leisurely cappuccino or glass of wine and gelaterias where you can sample mouth-watering gelato ice cream.

Food and Drink:  As in most regions of Italy, in Eastern Tuscany you can expect to eat abundantly and well. Breakfast at the Oasi is a buffet which includes coffee, fresh brioches, yoghurt, cereal, cheese, ham, croissants and jam. Dinner is a satisfying way to end a day of walking. On five nights we eat in the hotel dining room with a choice of main course plus a starter, a pasta dish and dessert. Wine is included. On two nights we dine at nearby restaurants.
